Community roundup: Everett flag football teams reach nationals

Plus, Alivia White wins her first college wrestling tournament, EvCC men’s soccer falls just short of NWAC semifinals, and more.

Two Everett Elite Flag Football teams are headed to the Pro Bowl, including one team that made history.

Both the Everett Elite 12-under girls and 10-under boys teams won their divisions at NFL FLAG’s Seattle Seahawks regional tournament, which took place Sunday in Tacoma. Winners qualified to compete in the NFL FLAG Championships, which take place Feb. 2-4 in Orlando, Florida, in conjunction with the NFL Pro Bowl.

The Everett Elite 12U girls are the first girls team from Washington to ever advance to nationals. They were led by Kylie Mance, who was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. The other team members are Lila Saga, Naomi Anderson, Sophie Kittle, Halle McCown, Abby Adkins, Kovi Kim and Analise Janica. The team is coached by Jacob Hiatt and Ron Anderson.

The Everett Elite 10U boys consist of Sebastian Rojo Jr., Watson Koehl, Lennox Johnson, Mehlo Due, Alton Peters, William Langus, Luke Ramsey, Cooper Elkins and Christian Bradley. The team is coached by Hiatt, Eric Due and Tony Johnson.

White opens college wrestling career with tourney win

Alivia White’s collegiate wrestling career is off to a roaring start as the Marysville Pilchuck High School graduate, who’s now a first year on the University of Iowa’s women’s wrestling team, won a championship in her first ever college tournament, claiming first place in the 191-pound bracket at the Princeton Tiger Collegiate Open on Sunday in Princeton, New Jersey.

White spent a total of 2 minutes, 2 seconds on the mat the entire tournament, winning all three of her matches by pin. In the championship match she needed just 1:00 to pin Delaware Valley’s Sophie Pollack.

The tournament championship followed up White’s college debut, when she defeated Ariel Ofri-Akman by pin in just 17 seconds in Iowa’s season-opening 43-1 victory over East Stroudsburg on Saturday.

EvCC men’s soccer knocked out in NWAC quarters

The Everett Community College men’s soccer team was eliminated from the Northwest Athletic Conference tournament by a 2-1 loss at Columbia Basin on Saturday in Pasco.

Everett, the No. 3 seed from the North Region, had a tough task against Columbia Basin, which is the No. 1 seed from the East Region and the top-ranked team in the NWAC coaches poll. The Trojans scored first when Reid Schaeffer scored on an assist from Luis Carillo in the 21st minute. However, two second-half goals in a span of four minutes by the Hawks sunk Everett.

Everett reached the quarterfinals by pounding South No. 2 Portland 5-0 last Wednesday, with Westin Galle scoring twice while Cristiano Whitaker, Tatsuya Cosey and Caleb Podoll each found the net once.

Everett finished its season 12-2-5.

EdC, EvCC draw into NWAC volleyball tournament

Both the Edmonds College Tritons and the Everett Community College Trojans qualified for the Northwest Athletic Conference volleyball tournament, which begins Saturday.

Edmonds (22-11) qualified as the North No. 2 seed and is competing in the South bracket, which is taking place in Albany, Oregon. Everett (21-11) advanced as the North No. 4 seed and was placed in the East bracket, which is taking place in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.

Each of the four regionals is double-elimination, with two teams advancing to the elite eight, which takes place Nov. 17-19 in Lakewood.

Arlington High School graduate Meredith Marsh, now a first year on the Whatcom Community College volleyball team, was named the Volleyball Setter of the Week. Marsh had 81 assists and 27 digs as the Orcas won matches against Olympic and Edmonds.
