Alex Wertheimer, a 6-foot-4, 240-pound senior defensive end, was named the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference’s 2009 Defensive Player of the Year.
Wertheimer is a 2006 Everett High School graduate. He played for Occidental College, an NCAA Division III school located in Los Angeles.
Wertheimer ranked second on the team in tackles with 55, and led the Tigers (7-2) with 19 tackles for loss and 71/2 sacks. He also had three pass breakups, 19 quarterback hurries, one fumble recovery and one blocked kick.
Everett FC places second in President’s Cup
The Everett FC U-17 boys soccer team lost to North Bend United 1-0 Saturday in the championship game of the President’s Cup tournament at the Starfire Complex in Tukwila.
Everett FC finished the season with a 13-2-1 record.
Members of the Everett squad included Mitchell Bohart, Tanner Jelinek, Shane Hunt, Soren Vanlandingham, Navjot Sangha, Billy Pavey, TJ Esford, Cameron Sphung, Nick Hollinger, Andrew Barrios, Ali-Nassar, Alex Tashereau, Sam Nelson, Isidro Diaz and Stefan Mueller.
The team was coached by Theresa Nelson.
Local soccer players make trek to Orlando
Sean Bowman and Matt Reinikka, students at Heatherwood Middle School in Mill Creek, represented Region IV at the U.S. Youth Soccer Thanksgiving Interregional Tournament in Orlando, Fla. They are both members of Crossfire Premier (Bowman is U-13A and Reinikka is U-14A).
