Matt Koenigs, the head cross country and track coach at Everett Community College, placed fourth in the men’s 30-34 age group and 14th overall at the 2012 International Triathlon Union Aquathlon World Championships on Oct. 17 in Auckland, New Zealand.
The event combined a 1,000-meter swim and a 5,000-meter run.
Koenigs finished in 31 minutes, 33 seconds — 47 seconds behind winner Michael Prince of Australia and eight seconds out of third place for a spot on the podium. There were 45 competitors in the men’s 30-34 age group.
“I knew that I had a chance at a podium spot going into the race,” Koenigs said in an email. “I would have loved to have come home with some hardware, but I gave everything I had and had my best race when it counted. So, I’m very happy about my performance.
“To come into this — just my second Aquathlon after winning my age group at the National Championship back in July — and take 4th for my age group in the World is really satisfying.”
Next year’s World Championships are in London, Koenigs said, and “I’m going to start saving the moment I get home so that I can get back to this competition and have another shot at the podium.”
Red Raiders win
The Everett Red Raiders, a football team comprised of area community college students, defeated the South Sound Spartans 48-14 Sunday at South Sound Stadium in Lacey.
Everett had two touchdown runs by quarterback Braden Bouwman-Hess (Issaquah High School), including a 90-yarder. Running back Julian Willis (Cascade) added two rushing TDs, and John Odion (Shorecrest), James Guy (Lake Stevens) and Achilles Wynn (Burlington-Edison) each had a touchdown reception.
The Red Raiders play host to Columbia Basin at 1 p.m. Saturday at Lake Stevens High School. The two teams are tied for first in the Northwest Junior College Football League.
