The Everett FC U-17 boys soccer team advanced to the championship game of the 2009 Washington President’s Cup with a 3-1 semifinal victory over the Auburn Strikers on Sunday at Kasch Park in Everett.
Everett FC plays in the title game at 1:45 p.m. Saturday at the Starfire Sports Complex in Tukwila.
The President’s Cup is billed as Washington Youth Soccer’s “only state recreational tournament.” According to the WYS Web site, the event draws more than 450 teams annually.
Members of the Everett squad include Mitchell Bohart, Tanner Jelinek, Shane Hunt, Soren Vanlandingham, Navjot Sangha, Billy Pavey, TJ Esford, Cameron Sphung, Nick Hollinger, Andrew Barrios, Ali-Nassar, Alex Tashereau, Sam Nelson, Isidro Diaz and Stefan Mueller.
The team is coached by Theresa Nelson.
Gack places eighth at world powerlifting championships
Ken Gack of Everett placed eighth out of 10 competitors at the recent International Powerlifting Federation world championships in New Delhi, India.
Gack, a member of the United States team, lifted 622 pounds in the squat portion of the competition, 512 in the bench press and 611 in the deadlift, to finish with a total of 1,745 pounds. The event was dominated by lifters from Eastern Europe, with the gold and silver medal winners lifting totals of more than 2,200 pounds.
Gack, 39, called the journey “an amazing trip,” both for the competition and for the opportunity to experience “a culture so alien to my own.”
Lynnwood’s Rowland earns honorable mention
Lynnwood native Bianca Rowland received honorable mention last week when the All-Pac-10 Volleyball Team was announced.
Rowland, who attended King’s High School in Shoreline, is a sophomore middle blocker for the University of Washington Huskies.
Three Huskies — Tamari Miyashiro, Kindra Carlson and Jenna Hagglund — made the 14-member first team.
