The White Sox from Mill Creek Little League defeated Pacific Little League’s Harbor Square, 11-9, on Saturday to win the Tournament of Champions in Lake Stevens.
The double-elimination baseball tournament brings together the top major-division teams (ages 10-12) from the 16 leagues in Washington’s District 1. The White Sox went 4-0 in the tournament, beating North Everett, Stilly Valley, Marysville and Pacific.
The White Sox trailed 8-1 in the second inning of the title game, but rallied with 10 runs over the second, third, fourth and fifth innings. Pitchers Addison Beckmann and Taylor Merwin combined to give up just one earned run over the final 42/3 innings.
The White Sox finished the season with a 31-2 record.
The team included Beckmann, Merwin, Kristjan (Bubba) Porter, Adam Fielders, Kyle Karr, Case Matter, Hunter Bryson, Colton Matter, Ryan Contreras, Jameson Keenan, Dylan Jastad and Justin Wingert. The manager was Chris Merwin and the coaches were Butch Matter, Craig Beckmann and Derek Bryson.
Adison Beckmann, Case Matter, Colton Matter and Taylor Merwin move on to play on Mill Creek’s 11/12 All-Stars. Hunter Bryson and Kyle Karr will play on the 10-11 All-Stars, and Ryan Contreras will play on the 9/10 All-Stars.
Sutter places fifth
Brian Sutter of Monroe placed fifth Sunday in the San Francisco Marathon. It was the first marathon for Sutter, 21, who recently graduated from Claremont McKenna College in Claremont, Calif.
Sutter covered the 26.2-mile course in 2 hours, 37 minutes and 9 seconds. Francious Lhuissier of France won the race in 2:25.15. The race drew 5,763 runners.
Sutter, a graduate of Monroe High School, ran cross country and track at Claremont McKenna. This past fall, he was named to the NCAA Division III All-West Region cross country team.
RPI’s Gallagher honored
Tim Gallagher of Snohomish has been named to the All-Liberty League Baseball Team as a relief pitcher.
Gallagher, a junior at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y., earned first-team honors. He posted 5-1 record and 1.90 earned-run average for the Engineers, who advanced to the NCAA Division III regionals. RPI finished the season 30-15.
Gallagher is a 2010 graduate of Snohomish High School.
