The coach who resurrected Edmonds Community College softball from oblivion is moving on to a higher level.
Sheryl Gilmore, who took the Tritons from being a Northwest Athletic Conference doormat to being one of the best teams in the league, was hired as head coach at Western Washington University.
When Gilmore, a graduate of Edmonds-Woodway High School, took over as Edmonds CC’s coach in the 2014-15 school year, the Tritons had gone 12-253 over the previous eight seasons. But during her four seasons in charge Edmonds went 106-60, culminating this year with a school-record 42 wins, a North Region title and a third-place finish at the NWAC Softball Championship in May.
Gilmore, who earned her college degree at Western, facilitated the turnaround at Edmonds in large part by mining talent from Hawaii, with nine of the team’s 14 players on this year’s team hailing from the tropical island state.
Gilmore takes over from Amy Suiter, who stepped down after eight years to spend more time with her family. Last year the Vikings went 9-19 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference and 15-32 overall.

The other top local finishers were Mukilteo’s Alvin Kwak and Edmonds’ David Hansen, both of whom tied for 19th at 4-under.
Thorn prevails in K&N race
Derek Thorn outlasted the field to claim the title at the NAPA Auto Parts 175, which was part of the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West, on Saturday at Monroe’s Evergreen Speedway.
Thorn, the current series points leader, trailed pole sitter Derek Kraus most of the race. However, Kraus ran out of fuel on lap 116, allowing Thorn to pass and eventually take the checkered flag. Cole Rouse finished second and Ryan Partridge took third.
The Heritage Distilling 100, part of the Bud Crown Series for Super Late Models, was also scheduled for Saturday. However, it was postponed because of weather conditions, and it is not know whether it will be made up.
