Community sports roundup: Lake Stevens curler wins title

Luc Violette is once again a national champion.

The Lake Stevens native earned his fourth national gold medal in curling as his team claimed first place at the USA Curling Junior National Championships on Saturday in Two Harbors, Minnesota.

Violette, who plays out of the Granite Curling Club in Seattle, was part of Team Stopera along with Andrew Stopera, Ben Richardson, Graem Fenson and Riley Fenson. The team went 7-0 in round-robin play before topping Team Steinhaus 6-3 in the gold-medal match.

It was the third straight national championship for Team Stopera, and fourth overall for Violette.

Violette and company will now compete at the 2019 World Junior Championships on Feb. 16-24 in Liverpool, Nova Scotia.

Snohomish siblings third at skating nationals

Kayla and Kamden Black, a sister-brother duo from Snohomish, earned the bronze medal in the Intermediate (ages 18-under) Pairs division at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships on Saturday in Detroit. The Blacks, who skate out of the Seattle Skating Club in Mountlake Terrace and qualified for nationals by winning at the Pacific Coast Sectional Figure Skating Championships, earned a score of 68.61. Faye Kropf and Sasha Lunin of the Fort Wayne (Indiana) International Skating Club won with a score of 78.75.

Jr. Silvertips carry momentum into playoffs

The Everett Jr. Silvertips elite hockey teams completed their North American Prospects Hockey League regular seasons over the weekend in Detroit.

The 16U team went 3-1 to finish its regular season in the High Performance (top) division 9-6-0-1. Everett takes the No. 5 seed into the playoffs, which take place Feb. 15-18 in Detroit. Keiton Klein had 14 points (eight goals, six assists) in 16 games to lead the Silvertips in scoring.

The 18U team went 2-2 to finish its regular season in the High Performance (top) division 6-6-2-2. The Silvertips take the No. 7 seed to the playoffs. Cole Dubicki had 18 points (three goals, 15 assists) in 16 games to lead Everett in scoring.

The 15U team, which went 1-9-1-1 during the regular season in the High Performance (top) division, went 2-2 in the playoffs over the weekend. Jack Lambert had 17 points (12 goals, five assists) in 20 games between the regular season and playoffs to lead Everett in scoring.

Krueger takes 13th at CrossFit event

Keanna Krueger, a ninth grader at Cavelero Mid High School in Lake Stevens, placed 13th in the Youth 13-15 (Girls) division of the Wodapalooza Miami CrossFit Festival over the weekend. Krueger, who competes out of Remedy Athletics in Marysville, accumulated a score of 344 over the six workouts. Olivia Sulek of Mason, Ohio, won with a score of 534.

Emsley-Pai takes interim coaching job

Jackson High School graduate Kawika Emsley-Pai has been named the interim head baseball coach at Centralia College. Emsley-Pai, who spent 2010-15 playing in the minors and had been an assistant coach at Centralia since July, takes over for Cody Atkinson, an Everett Community College alum who resigned to take a position with the Cincinnati Reds organization.

Stars on Ice tickets on sale

Tickets for Stars on Ice, which takes place May 16 at Angel of the Winds Arena in Everett, are now on sale. The exhibition figure skating tour is scheduled to include 2018 men’s world champion Nathan Chen, two-time Olympic bronze medalist ice dancers Maia and Alex Shibutani, and three-time women’s national champion Ashley Wagner. Tickets start at $25 and are available by calling 1-866-332-8499 or visiting the Angel of the Winds Arena website.
