The Edmonds resident won his sixth individual national title when he placed first at the US Boomerang National Championships held Saturday at Lake Stevens Community Park.
Bower won the trick catch category and finished second in maximum time aloft, accuracy and endurance to tally the highest score among the competitors.
The championship was his second straight and sixth since 2007.
Fellow Edmonds resident James Stickney finished second.
TriMonroe Triathlon winners
Athletes from the Illinois-based MMTT-Mach II Elite team swept the junior races at the Tri-Monroe Triathlon held Saturday in Monroe.
The race served as a qualifier for the USA Triathlon Youth and Junior Elite Nationals on Aug. 4-5 in West Chester, Ohio.
The Junior (ages 16-19) Elite Cup Male race was won by MMTT-Mach II Elite’s Jack Deweerdt, while the Junior Elite Cup Female race was won by teammate Camille Buchanan.
The Youth (ages 13-15) Elite Cup Male race was won by Andrew Flynn and the Youth Elite Cup Female race was won by Cassidy Hickey.
Beard wins Junior Olympic shot put
Kimberly Beard, a 10-year-old from Mukilteo, won the shot put and placed in two other events at the USA Track and Field Pacific Northwest Association Junior Olympic Championships held over the weekend at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma. The fourth grader at Northshore Christian Academy won the girls ages 11-12 shot put with a distance of 26 feet, 4 inches. She also placed second in the discus (56-2) and third in the javelin (72-6).
Bloom named Academic All-American
Stanwood High School graduate Andrew Bloom, a graduate student this past season for the Whitworth University men’s track and field team, was named an NCAA Division III Academic All-American. Bloom, a three-time All-American in the javelin, graduated from Whitworth in 2017 with a 3.82 grade-point average, and is currently enrolled in Whitworth’s M.Ed. program in Administrative Leadership.
Vail to walk on at Seattle U
Recent Stanwood High School graduate Matt Vail is walking on to the Seattle University men’s basketball team, the school announced last week. Vail, a 6-foot-4 forward, helped lead the Spartans to the boys 3A state tournament this year.
