Community sports roundup: Youth soccer team wins top tourney

The Everett-based Washington Rush 2003-born boys team won a tournament in Del Mar, California.

The surf is most definitely up for the Washington Rush 2003-born boys youth soccer team.

The Everett-based club team won a prestigious tournament last week when it claimed the Boys U17 Black division of the 2019 Surf Cup held July 27-29 in Del Mar, California.

The Rush went 2-0-1 in pool play of the 12-team bracket, tying for first in their pool and claiming a spot in the semifinals.

The Rush defeated Rebels East Elite of El Cajon, California, 1-0 in the semifinals on a goal by Jordan Ross. Then in the championship game against Downtown United Soccer Club from New York City, the contest was scoreless through regulation and went to penalty kicks.

Alex Hristov, Aidan Drought, Johnny Youngsman, Jordan Kim, Pedro Martinez, Nathan Lemoi and Ross scored as the Rush converted all seven of their kicks, and Lucas Haigh saved Downtown United’s seventh attempt to give the Rush the title.

The Rush went through the entire tournament without allowing a goal.

The other members of the team are Aaron Stapleton, Tony Louangrath, Ashton Wolf, Bridger Tautvydas, Eddy Olson, Ethan Borland, Kaiya McCann, Kota McCann, Nick Ramoso, RJ Johnson and Junior Phonmath.
