A season that ended disappointingly was still very special for Western Washington University softball player Alexie Levin.
Levin, a sophomore first baseman, was named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Player of the Year last week for a season in which she batted .424 with 10 home runs and 47 RBI. Levin’s totals for home runs and RBI are both school records.
Levin, a 2012 graduate of Everett High School, was joined on the all-league first team by Autumn Isaacson, a junior outfielder from Lake Stevens. Isaacson, a transfer from Bellevue Community College, batted .400 and led the team in triples with four and stolen bases with 31. She was named the GNAC Newcomer of the Year.
During the regular season, Western Washington placed second in the GNAC to Western Oregon with a 17-7 league record. The Vikings were hoping for a spot in the upcoming NCAA Division II tournament, but saw their season end after losing games to Central Washington and Saint Martin’s at last weekend’s GNAC tournament. Western Washington finished with a 30-12 season mark.
Local teams advance to rugby title games
Two teams from the Old Puget Sound Beach rugby club won semifinal games on Saturday to reach next weekend’s championship games of the British Columbia Rugby Union playoffs.
In the Division I playoffs, the OPSB Beach Dogs defeated Richmond (B.C.) RFC 59-14, while the OPSB Orcas downed Surrey (B.C.) RFC 26-13. Both games were played at Seattle’s Magnuson Park.
Seattle’s two teams will travel to Vancouver, B.C., for next weekend’s two championship games, both against teams from the University of British Columbia.
