The Connecticut Sun used a strong first quarter to defeat the Washington Mystics 79-71 on Thursday.
The Sun outscored the Mystics 23-11 in the first quarter and held off Washington down the stretch to get the victory and improve to 3-1 on the season, matching the Indiana Fever with the best record in the Eastern Conference. With the loss, the Mystics fell to 1-3.
Tina Charles scored 26 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and Renee Montgomery scored 23 points to lead the Sun.
Connecticut held the WNBA’s second leading scorer, Crystal Langhorne, to just nine points. Playing every minute of the game, Kelly Miller scored 19 points to lead the Mystics.
