Manager Don Wakamatsu’s list of aches and pains has grown by one
Pitcher Roy Corcoran, who’s competing for the closer job, has biceps tendinitis in his right arm. That may (or may not, this is spring training after all) explain Corcoran’s 10.80 spring ERA and his dififcult outings of late.
Elsewhere on the health front:
-Erik Bedard, scratched from his start Wednesday because of a sore right gluteus maximus muscle, will start Monday’s game against the Dodgers and pitch one inning. Wakamatsu said there’s still time for Bedard to be ready for the season, although just barely.
-Brandon Morrow (tight right forearm) is scheduled to throw a full bullpen Monday. He threw off the front of the bullpen mound Saturday.
-Tyler Johnson, the best hope to become the Mariners’ left-handed relief specialist, will throw a bullpen Monday and a simulated game Wednesday. If those go well, he should be ready for exhibition games. Johnson missed all last year because of rotator cuff surgery and suffered a setback the first week of spring training.
-Chad Cordero, the former Nationals closer who the M’s signed to a minor league contract last week, will throw a bullpen this morning. He had labrum surgery in his right shoulder last July and probably won’t be ready to pitch until May or June.
-Cesar Jimenez, slowed because of a left biceps tendinitis, will pitch in Monday’s split-squad game against the Indians in Goodyear.
-Ken Griffey Jr. is scheduled to DH today and Monday (against the Dodgers in Peoria). After the Mariners’ off day Tuesday, the team will decide when to start playing Griffey in left field. That will be significant not only to get Griffey in the outfield, but to get him away from DH, where Mike Sweeney can get more at-bats.
