The 1963 Edmonds graduate spent 30 successful years as a wrestling coach in the Edmonds School District.

The Snohomish County Sports Hall of Fame’s class of 2023 will be inducted at the organization’s annual banquet on Sept. 27 at the Edward D. Hansen Conference Center at Angel of the Winds Arena in Everett. Here’s the next in a series of bios of the 2023 class highlighted by The Herald:

John Casebeer

Inducted as: Coach

High school: Edmonds class of 1963

Sport: Wrestling

Casebeer was a longtime successful wrestling coach in the Edmonds School District, largely at the middle school level.

Casebeer was an accomplished wrestler himself, winning a state championship at 123 pounds as a senior at Edmonds, then going on to earn All-American honors while wrestling collegiately at Central Washington University.

Following his wrestling career Casebeer was hired as a teacher and coach at Alderwood Junior High School, beginning a career of more than 30 years as a teacher and coach in the Edmonds School District. He spent 10 years at Alderwood, where he guided the wrestling team to eight district championships. After spending 1980-85 at Mountlake Terrace High School, he returned to the middle school level to take over at Brier Middle School, where in 18 years his teams won 18 district championships.

During his high school coaching career, Casebeer coached 25 state participants and one state champion. Among the middle school athletes he coached was Snohomish County Sports Hall of Famer Randy Couture. Casebeer was also a member of the Snohomish County Wrestling Officials Association for 27 years. In 2015, he was inducted into the Washington State Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
