Coupeville captures Northwest A crown

EASTSOUND – Casey Clark nailed two 3-point goals and Chris Good scored seven of his 15 points during a 19-9 third-quarter run, lifting Coupeville over Orcas Island Tuesday, 61-44.

The victory earned Coupeville (8-0, 14-3) the Northwest A League title and a first-round bye in the tri-district playoffs beginning Feb. 13 at Mountlake Terrace High School.

“They (Coupeville Wolves) worked hard in the third quarter to get open and score,” Orcas Island coach Greg Sasan said. “They also hit two 3-pointers right away and that is what got them going.”

Coupeville, after falling behind 17-12 after the first quarter, outscored Orcas 11-6 in the second quarter to tie the score at 23 at halftime.

“Coupeville really kept the pressure up on us in the second half,” Sasan said. “Defensively, we had a breakdown. We weren’t on the same page and we paid dearly.”

Clark finished the game with 12 points for Coupeville, which secured the victory in the fourth quarter thanks to a 19-12 spurt.

Tony Clark scored 15 points to lead Orcas Island, which can clinch the No. 2 spot into the tri-district tournament Saturday with a road win over Friday Harbor.

“There’s a little pressure on us,” said Sasan. “We would like to clinch the No. 2 Saturday. My kids know the math. But we’ll play one game at a time.”
