Darrington breezes past Orcas

DARRINGTON — Darrington led the entire game and didn’t give up a field goal until the second quarter in a 54-19 boys basketball victory over Orcas Island on Thursday night.

Darrington’s Cory Hoveskeland led all scorers with 16 points, including two 3-pointers. Teammate Mike Parris was right behind with 14 points, and he also had seven blocks and seven steals on the defensive end of the floor.

The Loggers were scheduled to face Chief Leschi tonight, but the game was cancelled. Darrington concludes its regular season next week against Friday Harbor on Tuesday and Concrete on Friday.

Archbishop Murphy 59, Granite Falls 46: At Granite Falls, freshman guard Paris Felder netted 16 points, more than double his season-high, and teammates Jared Smith and JJ Quinlan added nine apiece as the Wildcats beat Granite Falls in a Cascade Conference clash. Juniors Thomas Knudson and Brad Beard each scored 14 points to lead the Tigers.

Tulalip Heritage 93, Eastside Academy 50: At Tulalip, Jordan Wasko had 53 points in Tulalip Heritage’s victory, a school record. Wasko’s strong performance got the Hawks out of an eight-game slide. Wasko’s 32 points in the first half made him the focal point of Eastside Academy’s defense for the rest of the game so the Hawks ran him off triple and sometimes quadruple screens so he could get the ball in his hands. At the end of the night Wasko also had 10 rebounds, eight steals and three assists.

Girls basketball

Orcas Island 43, Darrington 38: At Orcas Island, trailing by seven points going into the fourth quarter, the Vikings came back to tie the score at the end of regulation, then rode their momentum to an overtime victory over the Loggers. All seven of Lanie Padbury’s points came in the fourth quarter and Cara Peacock had four points in overtime.
