Darrington girls capitalize on foe’s free-throw woes

SHORELINE – It had to be the ugliest game of the Class B Tri-District Tournament. But the Darrington girls basketball team will take the 37-28 win over Cedar Park Christian and the trip to the State Class B Tournament in Spokane that comes with that win.

Darrington head coach Cameron Ross was relieved to grab a state tournament berth. He feels that there are high expectations for his team after they finished seventh in the Class A Tournament last year.

“People say ‘you ought to be great at a smaller level’,” said Ross. “I don’t think they realize how good many of the teams are at this level. It puts a lot of pressure on us.”

In a game of countless errant passes, missed field goals and lapses in defense by both teams, the difference might have come at the free throw stripe. Cedar Park hit only one of 10 opportunities in the closing quarter. Overall, the Eagles were 1-for-11.

The Eagles kept it close until late in the third quarter. Midway through the fourth quarter Darrington went on a 7-3 run to close out the Eagles.

Darrington also found success more often from 3-point range, hitting five of the long baskets while the Eagles were held to a pair, both by Monique Lee, part of her team high 15 points.

Amy Jones of Darrington led all scorers with 16 points.

The Loggers will face Mount Vernon Christian on Saturday at 2:15 pm for the district title. Cedar Park will face King’s West, a team they have defeated twice in the regular season, at 4 pm Friday in a loser-out contest.

Cedar Park Christian-Lee 15, Garey 9, Johnson 2, Janes 2. Darrington-Jones 16, Nations 8, Bryson 4, Padgett 3, Meece 4, Haywood 2. 3-point goals-Lee 2, Jones 2, Bryson 1, Meece 1, Nations 1. Records-Darrington: 16-6 overall.
