SPOKANE – Carli Smith recorded 26 points and 18 rebounds to lead Valley Christian to a 75-36 victory over Darrington on Thursday in the consolation quarterfinals of the state girls Class B basketball tournament at the Spokane Arena.
Kelly Peterson added 13 points for the Panthers (22-5), who lost to top-ranked Pateros 69-62 in their state opener Wednesday.
Amy Jones, a sophomore guard who admits to being 2 inches shorter than her listed 5-6, led Darrington (16-9) with 20 points and 10 rebounds. No other Logger had more than six points in the loser-out game.
The Panthers scored at will inside and outrebounded Darrington 54-35. Valley Christian built a 33-19 lead at the half, then scored 21 points in each of the final two quarters.
The Loggers, who shot just 13 percent from the field in Wednesday’s 42-28 loss to Willapa Valley, hit just 29 percent Thursday. Jones went 9-for-23 from the field, and all her field goals were layups except for late runner in the lane. Jones led Darrington in scoring and rebounding both games at state.
Smith led all players with four steals.
