NEAH BAY-The Darrington Loggers inched closer to a state playoff berth Saturday by defeating independent foe Neah Bay 37-18.

The showdown was the first of two games between the two adversaries to decide a single state berth. Darrington (6-1) can wrap up the berth by defeating Neah Bay (3-2) for the second time Saturday at home.

If Neah Bay wins, the teams will play a third and deciding game a week from Tuesday. The venue has yet to be announced.

“All that is left is to win next week at home,” Darrington coach Rob Wales said. “We feel very confident playing at home. It’s now their (Neah Bay) turn to ride the ferries and buses and wake up at 5 a.m.”

Ronnie McCoy scored four touchdowns, three of which came in the second quarter, as Darrington scored 22 unanswered points to take a 22-6 halftime lead.

“We thought we could control the ball with our running game,” Wales said. “In fact, we controlled the ball for the majority of the game.”

McCoy, who scored on runs of 45, 15, 4, and 2 yards, rushed for 157 yards on 22 carries.

Defensively, Kevin Jones led the Loggers with 15 tackles and two sacks. Darrington held Neah Bay to 76 rushing yards.
