The Seahawks just finished their morning practice, which, unknown to them until after it ended, was their only one of the day. Today was scheduled to be a two-a-day, but Jim Mora decided to give his team the evening off.
And speaking of getting a day off, Lofa Tatupu wasn’t practicing today, but not because of an injury, a team spokesman said. The middle linebacker, like a lot of the players on the field after nine straight days of practice, was just a little beat up and was given a day to rest.
Here’s the rest of the list of players who didn’t practice today: LT Walter Jones (back), CB Marcus Trufant (back), G/C Grey Ruegamer (elbow), C Chris Spencer (ankle), LB D.D. Lewis (knee), and LB Will Herring (groin). Lewis didn’t suffer a recent injury, but rather is getting some periodic time off in camp to rest his knee, which was scoped in the offseason.
Corry Redding, who like Tatupu took a little time off, was back on the field today, though he did sit out some drills.
Rookie linebacker Aaron Curry, who signed yesterday had quite a few reps with the No. 1 defense today. That might have had as much to do with a lack of depth as it does his readiness to move into the starting lineup, however. There is very little doubt that Curry will be the starting strongside linebacker, but he still has some catching up to do in order to be at full speed.
A couple of highlights:
Defensive end Darryl Tapp made a few big plays today, getting into the backfield on a few occasions and batting down at least one pass. Tapp said he’s getting more comfortable in a new system that allows him to run free a bit more, and he’s certainly been showing it over the past few days.
Receiver Jordan Kent had one of his best days of camp, making several nice grabs, including one on which the 6-4 former Oregon Duck went way, way up to make an impressive catch. A legitimate question asked by one observer, however, was this: would Kent, a former basketball player and track athlete who is relatively new to football, have been willing and able to go up and make that catch in traffic if he knew he might get hit? We won’t know that until the preseason games begin, but on this Sunday morning, it was still one heck of a grab. Certainly one that won’t hurt his chances to make the team.
The team is back at it tomorrow afternoon.
