Defending champs reach doubles final

STANWOOD – Defending champions Daniel Redfern and Zach Tafoya of Stanwood reached the doubles final of the 4A District 1 boys tennis tournament Friday at Stanwood.

Redfern and Tafoya defeated Jesse Knutson and Spencer Mestel of Shorewood 6-2, 6-0 and play Scott Sheldon and Willie Guo of Edmonds-Woodway in today’s championship match.

Sheldon and Guo reached the final with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Andy Bell and Aaron Sher of Snohomish.

Both teams earned places in the state meet May 25-26 at Vancouver.

Knutson and Mestel and Bell and Sher dropped into consolation play. Knutson and Mestel play Ryan Cho and Steven Guo of Edmonds-Woodway today. Bell and Sher play Nick Kang and Brian Bae of Jackson. The winners of those matches play for the third and last state berth.

In singles, top seeds Chad Merkley of Snohomish and Richard Oam of Jackson reached today’s final. Merkley needed three sets to get past Alex Lin of Jackson 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. Oam handled Abraham Ahn of Kamiak 6-2, 6-2.

In the quest for the final state berth, Ahn plays Rhett Bouche of Mountlake Terrace today and Lin plays Snohomish’s Brandon Kent. The winners play for third place.

3A District 1 meet: At Mount Vernon, Shorecrest’s Marco Dehmel reached the singles final and teammates David Ehrlichman and Brian Sharkey won two matches and play in the doubles championship today.

Everett’s Andy Monro, Meadowdale’s Patrick Donnelly and Shorecrest’s Matt LaCourse remained alive in singles consolation play, The Meadowdale doubles team of Blaine Weller and Jake Haight play in the consolation semifinals today.

La Conner 3, Grace Academy 0: At Marysville, Eron Macartney scored twice to lead La Conner to the non-league win. The same two teams play again at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at Cedarcrest Junior High in the first round of the 2B/1B District 1 playoffs.

Goals-La Conner: Massey, Macartney 2. Goalkeepers-La Conner: Thorstenson. Grace Academy: I. Lugg. Records-La Conner 6-9 overall. Grace Academy 10-6.

Girls soccer

Coupeville 7, Concrete 0: At Coupeville, Britt Harpe scored three goals to lead Coupeville to the 1A/2B District 1 play-in game victory. Coupeville plays Meridian at 3 p.m. today at Mount Vernon High School. In the other play-in game, Nooksack Valley beat Mount Vernon Christian 5-0.
