Defense leads Murphy girls to win

EVERETT – The Archbishop Murphy Wildcats used a quick start and tough defense to defeat the South Whidbey Falcons 62-36 in a Cascade Conference girl’s basketball game Wednesday night.

Archbishop Murphy (2-2 in league, 5-5 overall) jumped out to a double-digit lead in the first quarter, sparked by Alyssa Smith who scored seven of her team-high 17 points in the period.

“We got a very good start and played really good defense,” Archbishop Murphy coach John Barhanovich said. “We made them take tough shots and turned some turnovers into fast-break baskets.”

After building a 15-point halftime lead, the Wildcats’ advantage grew to 45-17 by the end of the third quarter.

Samantha Pettinger added 13 points for Archbishop Murphy.

Lindsey Newman led South Whidbey (2-4, 5-7) with 17 points.

“It was just a really good team effort,” Barhanovich said. “The defense was really the key.”

The Wildcats and Falcons both beat everyone’s toughest opponent of late – the weather.

“It was nice just to be able to play,” Barhanovich laughed.
