Defensive effort gives Meadowdale boys edge over Everett

Herald staff

LYNNWOOD – The Meadowdale Mavericks pushed the Everett Seagulls from the ranks of the Western Conference South Division undefeated with a 61-45 win Tuesday.

Julian Williams scored a game-high 16 points, Aaron Smith added 13 and Justin Dennis had 12 for Meadowdale, but it was the Mavericks’ strong defensive second quarter that was the difference in the game. The Mavericks held Everett to four points in the period.

The Seagulls, down by 20 points at the half, outscored the Mavericks in the second half, but it wasn’t enough to overcome their lack of scoring earlier in the game.

According to Maverick assistant coach Dean Wiley, the loss by Everett was not indicative of the competitive Wesco season ahead.

“They will be O.K.,” Wiley said. “Jamie Lee is pretty darn good and tough to stop. He has a solid shot and is the key to their success this season.”

Lee led the Seagulls with 12 points.

While Everett might depend on Lee, Wiley sees the Mavericks strength in numbers.

“We are pretty deep,” Wiley said. “We have a strong bench, balanced scoring, and 10-11 guys that can come into play.”
