CHICAGO – DePaul guard LeVar Seals will miss the team’s NCAA tournament opener today because of a punch he threw during the Conference USA championship game.

Seals was ejected Saturday for punching Cincinnati’s Tony Bobbitt in the groin. The junior said it was unintentional but referees called it a fight.

NCAA rules call for an automatic, one-game suspension if a player is called for a flagrant personal foul for fighting.

“It’s not a conference rule,” C-USA deputy commissioner Brenda Wear said. “The conference is really prohibited by rule to review or alter the action.”

DePaul already was preparing for today’s game against 10th-seeded Dayton as if Seals wouldn’t play. Seals averages just 3.8 points and 1.7 rebounds, but he plays almost 17 minutes a game and is one of DePaul’s better defenders.

USC fires women’s basketball coach: Chris Gobrecht was fired as Southern California’s women’s basketball coach Wednesday. Gobrecht, who once was the University of Washington’s women’s coach, was 93-108 in seven seasons at the school and never got the Trojans to the NCAA tournament. USC was 15-13 this season.

Western Carolina player testing NBA draft: Western Carolina junior guard Kevin Martin submitted his name for the NBA draft Wednesday. Martin, who finished the season ranked second in the nation in scoring after averaging 24.9 points a game, will not sign with an agent and keep his option open of returning for his senior season.

Honors for Speer: Whitworth College basketball standout Tiffany Speer, a Snohomish High alum, has been named to the D3hoops.com All-West Region women’s basketball team. It was the second straight year that Speer, a junior forward, has made the team. She also was the Northwest Conference Player of the Year for the second season in a row and once again led the NWC in scoring average (21.1 points per game). Her play helped Whitworth to a 19-6 overall record and an 11-5 mark in the NWC.
