Tonight’s highly anticipated wrestling match between top-ranked Lake Stevens and No. 3 Snohomish is still on, according to Snohomish High athletic secretary Tammy Perry.

Snohomish schools are closed today but the district decided to allow after-school/evening activities. Usually sports events are postponed on days when school is closed.

The Lake Stevens-Snohomish wrestling match will begin at 7 p.m. at the Snohomish High main gym. Wrestling fans have been buzzing in anticipation on this online message board. As of this morning there were 32 comments. Some of the most recent posts give travel tips for getting to Snohomish and avoiding roads closed because of flooding.

A few fans offered score predictions, including: Lake Stevens 41-25, Lake Stevens 43-25, Snohomish 33-30, and Lake Stevens 45-27.

One of the most exciting, influential matches could be in the 152-pound division. Unbeaten George King of Lake Stevens is expected to battle Snohomish’s Micah Morrill. Morrill, a junior, is 13-1 this season. King, a 2008 state champion, placed first last month at the Tri-State Tournament in Idaho and also recently won his division at the El Cajon Invitational in California.

Finally, here are comments from the head coaches about tonight’s clash.

*Lake Stevens coach Brent Barnes: “We want to hopefully wrestle well every time we step on the mat. I’m sure, kids being kids that this match is probably a pretty big deal to them.”

*Snohomish coach Rob Zabel: “I hope that the kids that are still in the program understand the significance of what happened last year and that we’re entirely capable of doing it again. But it’s a matter of are we going to wrestle as flawlessly as we did last year.”
