EDMONDS – The Edmonds School District placed second-year Edmonds-Woodway girls basketball coach Shannon Akin on administrative leave prior to the Warriors’ game against Shorewood on Friday.
“Shannon wasn’t coaching because she was placed on administrative leave,” Edmonds School District athletic director Terri McMahan said.
McMahan said administrative leave is a step that’s taken when issues are brought up that require a review by the school district. She declined to be specific as to what the issues are, who brought them up, or why the district made its decision to put Akin on leave.
Administrative leave is not intended to be a punitive action, McMahan said. What action the district takes next depends on the outcome of the review.
Assistant coach Amber Shelley, who along with assistant coach Christi Osburn filled in for Akin, declined comment after Friday’s game, referring inquiries to Edmonds School District officials.
Akin said in an e-mail that she would not comment until she has more information from the district, which could come Wednesday.
Edmonds-Woodway is 2-4 in Western Conference South Division play and 3-7 overall. Akin, a former Shorecrest assistant, coached the Warriors to a fifth-place finish in the Wesco South last year (10-8 league, 10-12 overall) and a Class 4A district playoff berth.
