Rone Brewer, Northwest Chapter president, Washington Waterfowl Association, said Commissioner of Public Lands (DNR Director) Peter Goldmark has met with tribes and intends to provide them free “tribe regulated” access to state DNR lands, behind gates that block out the public.
A proposal produced at the Sept. 13-14 Statewide Tribal Summit stated individual tribal member access to DNR-managed trust lands would be subject only to oversight by the respective tribal government. It stated DNR would rely on tribal governments to be partners in addressing mutual concerns related to access, safety and resource protection.
Public documents show tribal donations to Goldmark’s campaign during the last election included Yakama, $1,600; Muckleshoot, $1,600; Nisqually, $1,600; Swinomish, $1,600; Puyallup, $800; Spokane, $500; Squaxin Island, $500; and Suquamish, $500.
