Don’t call it an upset! Bruins top Panthers

SNOHOMISH- Don’t call Cascade’s Wesco North 7-1 win over Snohomish – at Snohomish – an upset.

“Our kids play a good game,” said Cascade coach Pat Opel. “(Pitcher Jeff) Mugge threw a good ball game and (relief pitcher Clayton) Shaw did his job.”

Mugge and Shaw combined to give up one run on two hits in five innings and the Bruins capitalized on two Snohomish errors in the fourth inning to bust open the Wesco North contest.

The Bruins (4-1 in league and 6-3 overall) tacked on four more runs in the top of the fifth, exploiting two more Snohomish (5-2, 8-4) errors. The inning was punctuated by a two-run double by second baseman Mike Matson.

With the scoring out of the way, Cascade went back to what it does so well.

“It’s all about the mound,” Opel said. “We’ve gotten our pitching counts down, gotten ahead in the count. Mugge is a hard-throwing right-hander. Clayton does his job (as a reliever). He throws strikes ‘right now,’ with the first batter.”

Snohomish will get a chance for revenge when the two teams meet today at 4 p.m. at Cascade High School.

“We were lined up (after the game)… and I pointed to their team and told my guys ‘they’re going to be fired up to come after you tomorrow,’” Opel said.

“I challenged my team to steal one from them at Snohomish. Taking two would be icing on the cake.”
