VANCOUVER, B.C. – Welington Dotel doubled home the go-ahead run in the 11th inning then scored on a wild pitch to lift the Everett AquaSox to a 12-10 victory over the Vancouver Canadians Wednesday at Nat Bailey Stadium.
Shortstop Roberto Mena opened Everett’s half of the 11th with a walk issued by Bryan Collins (0-1). Mena moved to second base on Edilio Colina’s sacrifice bunt and Dotel followed with a tie-breaking double to right field.
Dotel moved to third base on Ogui Diaz’s groundout and scored on Collins’ wild pitch.
AquaSox pitcher Aaron Brown retired the Canadians in order in the bottom of the 11th to record his second save and end the 4 hour, 24 minute game.
Everett (17-25), which has now won three straight, blew a six-run lead in the rare mid-week afternoon game.
Sox pitchers issued 12 walks, with starter Juan Ramirez issuing seven free passes.
Vancouver (20-21) first baseman Daniel Hamblin’s sacrifice fly in the ninth inning capped the Canadians comeback, scoring Michael Richard to knot the score at 10-all. Richard hit a lead-off single, advanced to second on Matthew Sulentic’s single, and took third on a wild pitch by Sox reliever Brandon McKerney.
The AquaSox sent 11 batters to the plate in the fourth. Playing in his sixth game with the team, catcher Blake Ochoa hit Everett’s first grand slam of the season to put the AquaSox ahead 7-1.
Left fielder Jermaine Brock singled home a run in the sixth for the Sox and right fielder Joseph Dunigan added a two-run double in the seventh.
The Canadians pulled to within one at 7-6 in the fifth. Justin Frash hit a two-run triple off Everett reliever Keith Meyer, one of just two Vancouver hits in the fifth. The Canadians added single runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings.
