An entertaining day for waterfowlers, or anyone who enjoys watching retrievers at work, comes to the Monroe area Saturday in the form of the Washington State Duck Calling Contests and the third annual National Duck Dog Challenge.
The events are sponsored by the Washington Waterfowl Association.
The calling contests start at 9 a.m. and include Junior Duck (12 and under), PeeWee Duck (7 and under), Open Duck, Open Goose, State Duck, State Goose and Two-person Duck, in that order. For more information, contact Rone Brewer at 206-595-7481 or nwducks@frontier.com.
The National Duck Dog Challenge is a hoot. It’s open to amateurs and pros alike, and any breed of dog, and is promoted as “sporting clays with your dog.”
A retriever “bumper” is loaded with a clay, and launched from any of several locations around the blind where the shooter and the dog are waiting. The shooter breaks the clay (maybe) and the dog retrieves the bumper (maybe). Cash and donated prizes are awarded on an elapsed-time basis. The event takes place off Highway 2, just west of Monroe, near the old dairy site. Turn south at the last right turn before Fryelands Boulevard (Lake Tye) and cross the railroad tracks.
