PASCO – The Everett AquaSox can finally put away those tie-dyed jerseys.
Everett’s five-game winning streak was snapped Friday night with a 2-0 loss to the Tri-City Dust Devils at Dust Devils Stadium.
The Sox had been sporting their Frogstock tie-dyed jerseys since their winning streak began Saturday against Spokane.
AquaSox starting pitcher Tony Butler had a strong outing in his third Northwest League start of the season, allowing one run on no hits in five innings of work.
That’s correct – one run on no hits.
Tri-City scored its lone run against Butler in the first inning when Butler walked the leadoff batter, Dust Devils center fielder Anthony Jackson.
Jackson advanced to second on a fielder’s choice, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly by Michael McKenry.
The 6-foot-7 Butler, a left-hander, got progressively better as the game went on, striking out five straight and seven of his last eight batters.
Butler (0-1) finished with nine strikeouts, easily surpassing his previous high of four.
Everett’s no-hitter was broken up in the sixth inning when McKenry singled off Sox reliever Jose Suriel.
While Butler was pitching a gem, AquaSox batters were having their own problems manufacturing runs against the Dust Devils.
Everett managed six scattered hits and had two scoring opportunities that came up empty.
Catcher Chao Kuan Wu was thrown out at the plate by Jackson in the fifth inning while trying to score from second on a single by left fielder Gavin Dickey.
In the eighth inning the Sox left the bases loaded when designated hitter Daniel Santin grounded into a force out at second base.
The Dust Devils added an insurance run in the seventh when catcher Ramon Rodriguez singled home shortstop Daniel Mayora.
Dickey and center fielder Kevin Reynolds led Everett with two hits apiece.
Dust Devils starter Andrew Graham (1-0) picked up his first win of the season, striking out three.
Tri-City’s William Harris struck out two Everett batters in the ninth inning to register his third save of the season.
