E-W comes alive to stay tied for first

EDMONDS — The wake-up call came just in time.

The Edmonds-Woodway Warriors overcame a slow start before rallying for a 3-1 (23-25, 25-16, 25-14, 25-23) victory over Shorecrest in a key Wesco South volleyball match Thursday night.

By pulling out the triumph after dropping the opening game E-W (3-0 in league, 7-1 overall) remained tied with Kamiak atop the division. Shorecrest, a 3A school, dropped to 1-2 in league play and 6-2 overall.

“I think we were a little more tenative and nervous than we should have been,” E-W assistant coach Nicole Bordeaux said. “We kind of waited for (Shorecrest) and didn’t play up to our speed in that first game.”

Leigh Fishback, a sophomore setter, keyed the E-W attack with 44 assists. Outside hitter Marisa Wellington came up with 16 kills and 15 digs. Cailin Fellows (12 kills) and Alex Storino (18 digs) also played key roles for the Warriors.

Shorecrest was led by Gloria Tseng (11 kills, 14 digs), Anna Herold (30 assists, five kills) and Jamie McDonald (six kills, three blocks).

Jackson 3, Mariner 1: At Everett, the Timberwolves won 25-20, 25-12, 11-25, 25-22 in the Wesco South match. Cerise Khakal led Jackson with 22 assists and Angelina Rich had 11 kills and 11 digs. Sarah Bhak added 13 digs for the Timberwolves (1-1 league, 3-5 overall). Mariner (1-2, 3-4) was led by Shasta Gloveo’s 28 digs, Shannon Peterson’s 16 assists and 13 digs, and Brittany Ruscha’s six kills and five blocks.

Shorewood 3, Lynnwood 1: At Shoreline, Caroline Soules’ 10 kills and Krissi Postor’s 10 digs led Shorewood to the 21-25, 25-19, 25-13, 25-21 Wesco South win. Erin Hill added three aces and 14 assists and Thea Kempton had six kills for the Thunderbirds (1-2 in league, 1-6 overall). Katyln Dill led Lynnwood (0-3, 1-7) with 19 kills and 10 digs. Gabby Vo added nine kills and Laycee Hill and Stephanie Mohoric each had 13 assists for the Royals.

Kamiak 3, Mountlake Terrace 0: At Mukilteo, Kamiak remained unbeaten in Wesco South play with a 25-16, 25-23, 25-11 win over Mountlake Terrace (1-1 in league, 4-4 overall). Kierra Riley (10 kills), Jordan Keller (six blocks), Melissa Fredricks (seven digs) and Devin Larson (33 assists) led the Knights (3-0, 7-1).

Snohomish 3, Arlington 0: At Snohomish, Jessica Yates’ 11 kills, five blocks and five digs led a 25-10, 25-18, 26-24 sweep of Arlington in the Wesco North match. Larissa Dirks had eight kills and six aces and teammate Shannon Nichols had 15 assists and five aces for Snohomish (1-2 in league, 4-4 overall). Breanna Covey (six kills, eight blocks) and Kelsey Czaban (25 assists) led Arlington (0-2, 0-8).

Marysville-Pilchuck 3, Stanwood 1: At Marysville, M-P (3-0, 6-2) overcame a first-game elbow injury suffered by setter April Bobadilla and rebounded for a 23-25, 25-21, 25-13, 25-16 victory over Stanwood (1-2, 2-6) in the Wesco North match. Bobadilla returned and finished with 31 assists and three kills. Emily Boerger (14 kills, four aces) and Jadelyn Thompson (51 digs) also shined for M-P. Stanwood was led by Kaitlyn Dowd (26 assists, 14-for-14 serving) and Deanna Hoppe (seven kills).

Monroe 3, Lake Stevens 0: At Monroe, Kaitlyn Drew’s 27 assists and Kylin Munoz’s 14 kills led Monroe to the 25-16, 25-12, 25-11 Wesco North sweep. Jerrika Groenweg (eight digs) and Claire Sowers (five aces) also led Monroe (3-0 in league, 7-1 overall). Lake Stevens (0-2, 1-6) was led by Kaitlyn Jones’ 17 assists and Janae Harpham’s six kills.

Meadowdale 3, Oak Harbor 1: At Lynnwood, Danielle Gilbertson was a perfect 17-for-17 serving and had 13 kills and 17 digs to lead Meadowdale to the 19-25, 25-20, 25-20, 25-17 non-league victory. Katie Cowan had 33 assists and eight digs and was 19-for-19 serving with three aces for the Mavericks (6-2 overall). Becca Wheeler recorded 28 assists and served four aces for Oak Harbor (6-1) and Jennifer Jansen and Clair Theil each had eight kills.

Archbishop Murphy 3, Cedarcrest 1: At Duvall, the Red Wolves won the first set 25-18, but dropped the next three 25-19, 25-10, 25-11 to the Wildcats (7-1 league and overall) in the Cascade Conference match. Kristen McKinlay had eight kills and four blocks and Amber Shields had 18 assists for Cedarcrest (5-3, 5-3). For Archbishop Murphy, Ashley Broadwell had six kills and five aces, Becca Gotz had 1 kills and two aces and Patti Reeves had 19 assists and two kills.

South Whidbey 3, Coupeville 0: At Coupeville, South Whidbey (3-5 in league, 3-5 overall) defeated Coupeville 25-14, 28-16, 25-13 in the Cascade Conference match. Megan Monroe led Coupeville with four aces and four kills. For South Whidbey, Marijane Daumen had 11 kills and Kelsie Dorpat had 14 assists.

King’s 3, Granite Falls 0: At Shoreline, Kailey Trautmann’s 14 kills and Anna Cesari’s 17 assists led King’s to the 25-17, 25-6, 25-7 Cascade Conference win over Granite Falls (4-4 in league and overall). Jordan Irish added seven kills for the Knights (8-0).

Lakewood 3, Sultan 0: At Lakewood, the Cougars won three straight 25-10, 25-22, 25-10 to beat the Turks in the Cascade Conference match. Lakewood (4-4 league, 5-4 overall) was led by Liliya Kibitskaya’s seven kills and 11 aces, Aly Stewart’s 11 kills, and Peyton Mizell’s 19 assists. Sultan’s Cassie Beucherie had five blocks for the Turks (0-8, 0-8).

Darrington 3, Concrete 0: At Darrington, Caitlin Pendergrass’ six kills and seven aces and Mandy Powell’s 10 aces led Darrington (6-1 in league, 7-2 overall) to the 25-9, 25-5, 25-10 win over Concrete (0-6, 0-6).

Lopez Island 3, Highland Christian Prep 0: At Lopez Island, Chelsey Graber recorded nine kills and Sarah Brown had 16 digs for Highland Christian (3-3 in league and overall), but Lopez Island (7-0) swept to a 25-20, 25-18, 25-14 victory in the Northwest 1B League match.
