MOUNTLAKE TERRACE – It took eight innings, but Edmonds-Woodway picked up a 1-0 softball victory over Wesco South opponent Mountlake Terrace Tuesday.
Both teams had scoring opportunities early, but the Warriors left five runners in scoring position and the Hawks left six.
“Both pitchers bore down and hit their spots,” Edmonds-Woodway coach Chris Paulson said.
The Warriors scored the only run in the top of the eighth inning when Desiree Sanchez (1-for-3) led off with a double and was sacrificed to third. Annika Lindberg (1-for-3) then hit a double down the line to score Sanchez.
“The kids (Edmonds-Woodway) prevailed and showed mental toughness,” Paulson said.
Mountlake Terrace threatened in the bottom of the eighth, but Emily Dean (eight innings, five strikeouts) got the final batter to fly out to center field to end the game.
“Got to give Terrace credit they are a well-coached team,” Paulson said.
Allison Yelenich pitched all eight innings with seven strikeouts and was 2-for-2 for Mountlake Terrace.
