E-W nabs first place in South boys tennis

EVERETT – Willie Guo and Alex Lin started their No. 2 singles match to open up the meet and, three hours later, they ended it.

Guo suffered leg cramps in the third set while leading 4-1, but was able to fight through for a 7-5 win, breaking a 3-3 tie and giving Edmonds-Woodway a 4-3 Wesco South victory.

“I had to help him stand up at 4-1 it would have been easy for him to stay down,” Edmonds-Woodway head coach Dan Crist said.

The victory gave E-W sole possession of first place in the division with an 8-0 record. Jackson fell to 6-1.

In the No. 1 singles match, E-W’s Scott Sheldon defeated Richard Oam in a tough match, 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-0 in the tiebreaker)..

“It was a classic match, Jackson won doubles we won singles,” Crist said.

Shorewood 4, Meadowdale 3: At Shoreline, Shorewood’s Andy Stern won a first-set tiebreaker en route to a straight-sets win at No. 4 singles to prevent a Meadowdale singles sweep and the Thunderbirds went on to sweep the doubles to capture the Wesco South meet.
