E-W upsets Terrace

EDMONDS – Edmonds-Woodway got some help from its junior varsity squad to post an upset wrestling victory over Mountlake Terrace in a Wesco South meet Tuesday night.

Freshman Michael Schaecher, stepping in for an injured varsity player, defeated Nate Dabling 20-4 at 125 pounds and the Warriors (2-3 in league, 3-5 overall) handed the Hawks (5-1, 7-2) their first league defeat of the season with a 36-31 win. It was Schaecher’s varsity debut.

“The kids really stepped it up and stayed focused and there was definitely an energy boost,” said Warriors coach Mike Hatchett.

Stanwood 37, Oak Harbor 34: Oak Harbor rallied after being down 37-6 going into the 103-pound match. Pins by Karlson Miller (112), David Wasickanin (125), Mark Stratton (130) and Jeff Lang (135) brought the Wildcats within three points of Stanwood. But the Spartans came out strong, getting first-round pins from Bryce Thorstad (215) and Carter Mann (275) to give Stanwood the cushion it needed to win the Wesco North meet.

Boys swimming

Lake Stevens 101, Cascade 69: The Wesco North meet was tied at the halfway point, but Lake Stevens was 1-2 in the 500-yard freestyle and 100 backstroke and 1-3-4 in the 100 breaststroke to pull away. Trevor Olson swam a state qualifying time in the 50 freestyle for Lake Stevens and won the 100 backstroke. Adam Aljets won two events for Cascade.

Everett 90, Meadowdale 80: Jonathan Keane swam two 4A state qualifying times for Meadowdale, but it wasn’t enough as Everett won the non-league meet. David Clobes won two individual events for Meadowdale.

Everett 88, Lynnwood 17: Brian and Alex Tarr helped lead Everett to the sweep of Lynnwood in the non-conference meet. Matt Kaftanski swam a 4A state qualifying time in the 100-yard backstroke.

Girls bowling

Anacortes 2, Mount Vernon 1: At Mount Baker, Bethany Nolan bowled a 414 series to lead Anacortes. Brandi Kester had a 447 series for the Bulldogs.

Cascade 3, Everett 0: At Mount Baker, Cascade’s Tiffany Triefchmann had a 650 series with games of 235, 206, and 209 to keep the Bruins (33-0) undefeated. Cascade’s Markeeta Munger had a 191 game and 560 series and teammate Christina Porter had a 208 game and 538 series. Everett’s Jennifer Michel had a 186 game and 495 series.

Jackson 2 Fernadale 1: At Mount Baker, Jackson’s Jennifer Wetzel had a 211 game and a 544 series and teammate Rachel Koenig-Eng had a 191 game and 482 series to lead Jackson (21.5-11.5).
