E-W’s Waldron/Nelson win Wesco South doubles title

MILL CREEK — Edmonds-Woodway’s Amanda Waldron and Michelle Nelson beat fellow Warrior teammates Sophie Roben and Sarah Fine in straight sets Thursday afternoon to win the Wesco South doubles championship at Jackson High School.

Waldron and Nelson won 6-2, 7-5.

The duo found their way into the finals as the result of a three-set comeback win over the Mariner tandem of Daril and Karla Perez.

In singles, Mackenzie Bang of Shorewood won the division championship, edging E-W’s Jan Hong in three sets (6-2, 3-6, 6-3).

ARLINGTON — Due to a three-hour match in the doubles main draw in which Snohomish’s Julie Winston and Brielle Nicholas defeated Aimee Policarpio and Shannon Tomsheck of Cascade 6-7 (10), 6-2, 6-4, the Wesco North tennis championships will conclude later today to decide the singles and doubles champions as well as third place finishers.

MILL CREEK — Josie Dow of Meadowdale took home the Wesco 3A girls singles championship by defeating Shorecrest’s Meera Limaye 2-6, 6-4 and 3-1 (default). Everett’s Katie Stewart prevailed in the consolation bracket to secure third place after beating Catherine Jorgensen. In doubles action, Everett’s duo of Anna Lauritzen and Jackie Nguyen beat teammates Holly Russell and Alysia Noriega 6-1, 6-1.

Boys soccer

Shorecrest 3, Mount Vernon 0: At Shoreline, the nationally ranked Scots (19-0 overall) blanked the Bulldogs (17-2) to win the 3A District 1 title, earning them the top seed at next week’s state tournament. Michael Harris scored in the third minute (Eli Blauser assist), Glenn Paden in the 50th (Maoulay Adjorlolo assist) and Blauser (Hiei Rose) in the 75th. Eric Baker recorded his 14th shutout of the season for the Scots while Luis Castro minded the Bulldogs’ nets.

Glacier Peak 5, Everett 0: At Shoreline, the Grizzlies utilized excellent defense and ball control to beat Everett in the 3A playoffs and move on to the consolation final against Mt. Vernon on Saturday. Jackson Miller had two goals and an assist for Glacier Peak and Brian Holguin added a goal and two assists. Miller opened up the scoring in the fifth minute and followed with another goal in the ninth minute off a Shane Miller assist to give Glacier Peak a 2-0 lead. Holguin’s goal came in the 31st minute (J. Miller assist) which was followed by Robin Hyrciuk in the 34th minute (Holguin assist). The last goal for the Grizzlies came on a penalty kick in the 72nd minute by Michael Mikulsky. Goalkeeper Andrew Weakly earned the shutout for Glacier Peak.

Squalicum 2, S. Whidbey 1: At Mt. Vernon, George Karabimas scored one of Squalicum’s three penalty-kick goals, leading his team to victory in the 2A District 1 playoff contest. Squalicum plays Lynden in a consolation bracket final Saturday with the winner earning a berth to state. Ian McCauley notched the lone goal for the Falcons, scoring on a penalty kick.

Cedarcrest 1, Burlington-Edison 0: At Mt. Vernon, Nik Porchia scored in the 77th minute to break a scoreless tie. Collin McHargue earned the shutout in goal for Cedarcrest as the Red Wolves move on to play Bellingham Saturday with a state berth on the line.

Softball

Coupeville 12, Meridian 7: At Coupeville, Taylor Lawson batted 4-for-4 with two RBI and scored four runs to lead the Wolves past Meridian and advance to the semifinals in the 1A District 1 playoffs.
