Early goals boost Murphy by rival

EVERETT — The Archbishop Murphy girls soccer team found a winning formula to beat a rival Tuesday afternoon.

Score early and hang on.

In a showdown of the top two teams in the Cascade Conference, the No.1 Wildcats downed Cedarcrest 4-1.

“It was just one of those matches where you have to fight and gut it out,” Archbishop Murphy head coach Dick Henderson said. “We were fortunate to have a two-three goal lead most of the game. That helps, getting those early goals.”

Lindsey Bos put the Wildcats (9-0 in league, 11-0-0 overall) on the scoreboard first in the 13th minute.

Bos, who was in a crowd of players in front of the Red Wolves’ goal, found herself with the ball and she lofted it over the keeper’s head from 6 yards out.

“The ball popped loose and came to her,” Henderson said. “She just tapped it in.”

Carolyn Brawner scored what proved to be the game-winner for Archbishop Murphy in the 22nd minute, drilling a shot inside the post from 12 yards out after bringing the ball upfield.

The victory over Cedarcrest (7-2, 9-2-0) was doubly sweet for the Wildcats. They beat a rival and now have a two-game cushion and the inside track to the Cascade Conference title.

“It’s been a pretty intense rivalry,” Henderson said of Murphy’s competition with the Red Wolves. “They’ve been winning the past three or four years. It was a physical game with a lot of energy.”

Bos added an exclamation point to the Wildcats’ victory in the 79th minute, finding the back of the net on a free kick from 22 yards out.

“She just drilled it,” Henderson said.
