SEATTLE – Even on his home-run trot, it’s obvious that Edgar Martinez is hurting.
The Mariners’ designated hitter strained his left groin while running to second base on a double in the first inning of Saturday’s game at Cleveland.
“He’s not going to get substantially better overnight,” Griffin said.
Martinez must run with extreme caution because one misstep could cause a muscle tear, Griffin said. That could have traumatic consequences for the offense at a time like this.
“Edgar has played a lot with leg problems and he knows the level he can run at,” Griffin said. “If he doesn’t, he knows the consequences. It’s when he rounds a base that it bothers him.”
Griffin said Martinez felt better when he reported to the ballpark Thursday.
“But it’s always better until he gets out there and starts moving around,” he said.
Martinez, who grounded into a rally-killing double play in the first inning Thursday, was lifted for pinch-runner Charles Gipson after an eighth-inning single.
