Edmonds District honors athletes

EDMONDS – Honoring four years of athletic and academic achievements, the Edmonds School District feted 17 seniors at the four-school Scholar-Athlete &Coach/Community Recognition Banquet Wednesday night.

Two Edmonds-Woodway seniors, Mara Vlasic and Brandon Huppert, headlined the ceremony as each earned a $3,000 scholarship for their achievements on the field and in the classroom.

“I was really surprised,” said Huppert, a football and track star for the Warriors. “I know a whole bunch of guys that deserve this award as much as me. It is a huge honor.”

Huppert now has plans to walk-on the football team at Boise State while pursuing a major in engineering.

Vlasic, a classmate of Huppert’s, excelled in both basketball and golf during her four years with the Warriors. Next year she will attend Western Washington with plans to study elementary education with a minor in spanish. Having served on two mission trips to Mexico, Vlasic hopes to eventually return to Latin America to pursue her passion of teaching.

“I don’t feel all that special, I just really enjoy all the things that I’ve been doing,” Vlasic said. “But, it is great to be honored for the things I have done.”

The school district also honored eight local coaches and four community contributors at the fourth annual banquet.

The district’s Director’s Award, given for personal and professional commitment to student academics and athletics, went to Meadowdale principal Norm Hoffman who will retire at the end of the year.

Scholar-athlete winners-Edmonds-Woodway: Emma Brewster ($2,500) and Nate Bennett ($1,000). Mountlake Terrace: Ronald Bang ($2,500), Mikkel Jensen ($1,000), Jonathan Juretich ($1,000) and Ashley Grover ($1,000). Meadowdale: Alex Dunsdon ($1,500), Lauren Helleren ($1,500), Rachel Myhre ($1,000), Jaken Linton ($1,000) and Joe Bartkowski ($1,000). Lynnwood: Brian Hill ($1,500), Julie Nguyen ($1,000), Vince Kinney ($1,000) and Ruby O’Conner ($1,000).

Coaches honored-Mountlake Terrace: Shawna Bogren (Cheer) and Jacque Powell (Drill). Lynnwood: Andrew Buton (Football) and Lisa Gordon (Cheer). Meadowdale: Wally Nagel (Boys’ swimming) and Sara Spencer (Cheer). Edmonds-Woodway: Anne Stewart (Track) and Andy Webster (Baseball and football).

Community contributor award winners-Tina Anderson (Edmonds-Wooday), Dann and Sandy Breidenbach (Lynnwood), Debra Dodge (Meadowdale) and Barb Brister (Mountlake Terrace).
