LYNNWOOD – Edmonds-Woodway had to go to a shootout to hold off Lake Stevens 2-1 Tuesday in a Western Conference loser-out girls soccer playoff game at Lynnwood High School.
The Warriors captured the victory by scoring all four of its penalty kicks, while Lake Stevens missed one and had one blocked by Edmonds-Woodway goalkeeper Teresa Hamilton.
“One miskick here and a save and it could of gone either way,” Edmonds-Woodway coach Bill LeCompte said of the penalty kicks. “We know that misfortune all to well.”
Edmonds-Woodway will play Snohomish at 7 p.m. tonight at Snohomish in another loser-out league playoff game.
The Lake Stevens defense was under constant pressure by the high-powered Warrior attack, but held Edmonds-Woodway to only one goal by a sliding Genevieve Kendall, who hit a cross from Krista Graybill into the back of the net in the 24th minute.
“Give their defense a lot of credit they came to play,” LeCompte said of Lake Stevens’ defense.
Lake Stevens scored in the 16th minute when Erin Nissen put in the rebound of a Malea Russum shot which deflected off the crossbar.
Hamilton made a game-saving slide out of the box to prevent Russum from scoring on a breakaway.
Neither team threatened to score in the two overtimes.
