Edmonds-Woodway’s Savanah VanCitters scored off a free kick in the 19th minute to lift the Warriors to a 1-0 victory over Snohomish in a 4A District 1 semifinal game Nov. 1 at Snohomish High School.
The victory earned the Warriors a state berth. E-W coach Bill LeCompte said he believed it is just the second time his school has qualified for the state tournament since the two schools merged in the early 90s.
E-W (10-5-2) plays for the district championship at 7:30 p.m., Nov. 3 at Snohomish High School. Snohomish (14-2-1) plays in the third-place game at 5:30 p.m. and must win that game and a play-in game against the Kingco 4A third-place team to reach state.
E-W goalkeeper Kiera Towell had three saves, including one LeCompte described as “huge” with 10 minutes to play. He said Towell went from post to post on a Snohomish cross and managed to get a hand on the shot and push it up into the crossbar.
