Todd Rubin is one rung closer to his goal of becoming a head basketball coach at the college level.
Rubin announced his resignation this week as the varsity boys basketball coach at Edmonds-Woodway High School. He has accepted a position as an assistant coach at Northwest University, a National Association of Interscholastic Athletics (NAIA) school in Kirkland.
Even though the move is a step up the professional ladder, Rubin said the decision was not easy.
“It was a hard decision,” he said. “The biggest thing is I’m going to be leaving a school where I built some great relationships with some great student-athletes and some really wonderful families.”
In his three seasons as the Warriors’ head coach Rubin compiled a 22-43 record. The Warriors reached the Class 4A District Tournament this past season and finished with a 10-13 mark.
During his tenure, Rubin helped launch a feeder program that he said should help strengthen the Warriors’ program.
“I feel like it’s headed in the right direction,” he said. “Whoever takes over will find success both on and off the court with the group of kids we have coming back.”
Rubin’s new team at Northwest University competes in the Cascade Collegiate Conference. This past season, the Eagles earned a spot in the 32-team NAIA national tournament. They lost to Saint Francis University in the first round to finish with a 21-9 record.
Edmonds-Woodway officials have begun the search for Rubin’s replacement. The job opening has been posted on the Edmonds School District website (www.edmonds.wednet.edu). Applications are being accepted through June 8.
