Edmonds-Woodway captures second seed to 4A district playoffs

EDMONDS – On Senior Night at Edmonds-Woodway High School, the Warriors volleyball team gave the seniors and the rest of the school something to cheer about, defeating Jackson 25-23, 25-17, 25-16 to give Edmonds-Woodway the Wesco South’s second seed into the upcoming 4A District 1 playoffs.

The Warriors lived by their team motto: “As one.” “Totally a team effort,” E-W volleyball coach Mike Pitts said about the victory. The “kids stepped up.”

Cailin Fellows led the Warriors (5-3 in division, 9-5 overall) with 15 kills. Senior Mari Hegyi had a fitting 12 kills, Erin Lauber had 10 kills and Sharon Kelley added 34 assists.

Jackson (5-3, 10-4), which received the third seed to district, was led by Brittany Eskridge with nine kills, Audra Linsenmayer with 22 assists and Angelina Rich, who added five kills.

E-W and Jackson will be joined in the 4A District 1 tournament by fellow Wesco South teams Kamiak (number one seed) and Mountlake Terrace (number four seed).

Shorewood 3, Meadowdale 1: At Shoreline, Caroline Soules had 16 kills and five blocks and Sara Hefny added 12 kills to lead Shorewood to the 20-25, 25-18, 25-17, 26-24 Wesco South victory. Erin Hill had 10 digs and Kristine Nichols had six aces for the Thunderbirds (1-7 in division, 3-11 overall). Meadowdale (1-7, 3-11) was led by Katie Cowan (31 assists), Mara Eberth (19 digs) and Lynsey Rohrbach (12 kills).

Shorecrest 3, Mountlake Terrace 0: At Mountlake Terrace, Molly Gibson (seven kills, three blocks), Anna Herold (seven kills, 19 assists) and Kerry Clavadetscher (17 assists) led Shorecrest to the 25-23, 25-16, 25-21 sweep of Mountlake Terrace, giving the Scots (8-0 in division, 14-0 overall) a perfect regular season. Dana Clement had 27 assists, Cassie Hansen had 10 kills and Anja Pendergraft added 13 digs for the Hawks (4-4, 8-6).

Kamiak 3, Mariner 0: At Everett, Devin Larson had 30 assists, Jessica Ramos had 10 digs and the Kamiak Knights swept the Mariner Marauders 25-15, 25-18, 25-19 in the Wesco South match. Nicole Bozek added 11 kills for the Knights (7-1 in division, 11-3 overall), who have already clinched a No. 1 seed in the 4A District 1 tournament. Ludia Gayvoronskiy (11 kills, six digs), Katherine Mabanta (24 digs) and Shannon Peterson (18 assists, seven digs) led the Marauders (1-7, 2-12).

Monroe 3, Snohomish 1: At Monroe, After losing the first set 23-25, Monroe came back to win the next three 25-15, 25-18, and 25-23 for the Wesco North win. Tarah Petrick had 39 assists and Kylin Munoz had 18 kills for the division champion Bearcats (8-0 in division, 13-1 overall). Teammates Kelsey Brennan had 15 kills and Kiley Simmons had 12 digs. Stephanie Gausman had 16 kills and Jessica Yates had eight kills and five blocks for the Panthers (2-6, 7-7).

Marysville-Pilchuck 3, Oak Harbor 1: At Marysville, Nancy Couls’ 13 kills and 14 digs led the Tomahawks to the 23-25, 25-15, 25-20, 25-18 Wesco North win over Oak Harbor. Kristeen Juarez added nine kills and was 19-for-19 serving with two aces for M-P (7-1 in division, 10-4 overall). Becca Wheeler had 26 assists and Jennifer Jansen had 11 kills for the Wildcats (3-5, 7-6).

Everett 3, Lake Stevens 1: At Everett, Everett won the first set 25-23 and lost the second 23-25, but came back to win the last two 26-24, and 25-22 for the Wesco North win. Maureen Frauenholtz had 18 kills and 35 digs and Erin Vance had three aces and seven kills for the Seagulls (6-2 in division, 8-6 overall). Kristi Clayton had 16 kills and Caitlyn Jones had 25 assists for the Vikings (1-7, 1-12).

Stanwood 3, Lynnwood 0: At Lynnwood, Stanwood defeated Lynnwood in three straight sets, 25-9, 25-13, 25-13, in the non-conference match. Whitney Appleby had 33 assists, and Megan Amundson had 13 kills for the Spartans (10-4 overall). Teammates Tarin Nicholas had 12 kills and Leah Titus was 19-for-19 serving with four aces. Abri Hill had four kills and four blocks for the Royals (4-4, 5-9).

Archbishop Murphy 3, Sultan 0: At Everett, senior Allie Gotz led the Wildcats (12-2 in league, 12-3 overall) on Senior Night with 17 digs in the 25-13, 25-12, 26-24 Cascade Conference victory. Sultan fell to 0-14, 0-15.

Cedarcrest 3, Granite Falls 1: At Granite Falls, Cedarcrest (10-4 league and overall) came out on top in the Cascade Conference match, defeating Granite Falls 25-9, 25-12, 28-30, 25-22. Granite Falls (6-8, 6-8) was led by Michaela Dudder with nine kills and Kerry Wesala with 12 digs. For Cedarcrest, Amber Shields had six kills and 40 assists, Wendy Walters had five aces and six kills and Becca Kent had four kills and 25 digs.

South Whidbey 3, Lakewood 2: At Langley, Katie Lint and Lindsey Newman combined for 24 kills and Chelsey Backus directed the offense with 32 assists to lead the Falcons (7-7 in league and overall) to the 25-17, 18-25, 25-13, 19-25, 15-9 Cascade Conference victory. Lakewood fell to 3-11, 4-11). For Lakewood, Aly Stewart had 16 kills and six blocks, Liliya Kibitskaya had 13 kills and nine digs and Peyton Mizell had 28 assists.

Shoreline Christian 3, Christian Faith 2: At SeaTac, Ann Barrick and Kirsten Landis paced the defense with a combined 30 digs and Anne Marie Visser added 22 assists as Shoreline Christian defeated Christian Faith in a five-game non-league match (25-23, 24-26, 17-25, 25-19, 15-10). Julia Dekoekkoek had 15 kills, four aces and six blocks for Shoreline Christian (9-5 overall).

North Sound Christian 3, Lummi 0 (forfeit): The victory gave N. Sound (10-2 league, 10-6 overall) the Northwest 1B League’s second seed to the bi-district playoffs. Lummi (8-4, 8-6) will be the third seed. N. Sound hosts fourth-seeded Master’s Touch in a first-round match at 6 p.m., Nov. 2. Lummi was forced to cancel its after-school activities to an outbreak of illness.
