MUKILTEO – Edmonds-Woodway broke through a staunch Kamiak defense Thursday, slipping in a late goal to beat the Knights 1-0 and clinch a tie for the Wesco South title.
Sophomore Alex Kirk scored in the 68th minute to allow the Warriors to finally shake loose of pesky Kamiak, which was playing for pride after being eliminated from postseason contention Tuesday.
Edmonds-Woodway captured the district’s No. 1 seed with the win, thanks to a tiebreaker advantage over co-leader Jackson.
Kamiak coach Mike Weatherbie said the Warriors put relentless pressure on his defense in the second half.
Kirk’s goal came off a scrum in front of Kamiak’s goalbox.
“The ball pinged around in front of the goal, it came out and Hayley Zevenbergen crossed it in and it just dropped on Alex’s foot and she hit an unbelievable finish,” Weatherbie said. “It was a gorgeous goal.”
