Edmonds-Woodway falls in seesaw battle

EDMONDS – A new coach can age quickly with a few games like this.

Zach Simard drilled a 15-foot jumpshot from the right-wing with 20 seconds left to play to lift Bishop Blanchet to a 44-42 victory over Edmonds-Woodway in the non-conference season opener for both schools Wednesday night.

“We got a little tentative and made some mistakes at the end,” first-year Warrior coach Rob McMains said. “But both teams played hard and got after it. For a first game we did very well.”

The game was a hard-fought contest that featured multiple lead changes. The Warriors had a 42-41 lead inside the final minute, but were unable to convert on free throw opportunities that might have iced the game.

Free throws, few as they were, proved crucial. The Braves hit six of eight from the line while the Warriors were just 3-for-7.

Simard led Bishop Blanchet, a Metro League school, with 18 points, but they didn’t come easy against the defense of E-W’s Kyle Trew.

“He earned his points,” McMains said. “Kyle was all over him.”
