Emeralds beat AquaSox 6-2, deal Frogs 2nd straight loss

EVERETT — The Everett AquaSox dropped their second straight game and fourth in their last five Tuesday as they fell 6-2 to the visiting Eugene Emeralds before 979 fans on a dreary Tuesday night at Everett Memorial Stadium.

Northwest League South Division-leading Eugene (14-5) erased a two-run deficit with three runs in the top of the second and never trailed again as it topped Everett (10-9) in the second of the five-game set.

Dylan Cease (1-0) overcame a rougth start in the first inning to earn the win as he fanned four in five innings. Ljay Newsome (2-1) suffered the loss for the AquaSox.

Everett opened the game with four consecutive singles against Cease and took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first.

The AquaSox had only two hits the rest of the way.

Both came in the top of the sixth as Kyle Lewis and Eric Filia led off the sixth with back-to-back hits. One out later Nick Thurman walked. But Eugene reliever Danny Lewis induced a double play from Jose Leal to end the inning.

Trailing 2-0, the Emeralds took the lead for good in the second.

Wladimir Galindo hit a solo home run, Robert Garcia drove in a run with an RBI single and Jose Paniagua came in to score on an error to give Eugene a 3-2 lead.

Eugene tacked on another in the fourth when Robert Garcia scored from first base on a double by DJ Wilson, and Chris Pieters’ two-run home run in the eighth made it 6-2.

The AquaSox opened the the bottom of the first with four consecutive singles, with Filia’s scoring Bryson Brigman.

Jhombeyker Morales followed with a sacrifice fly to chase home Nick Zammarelli and Everett led 2-0 through one.

The AquaSox didn’t score again.

Lewis and Filia each had two hits.

The series continues tonight at 7.

Reggie McClain (0-2, 9.00 ERA) will start for the AquaSox against Eugene’s Bryan Hudson (1-0, 1.29).
