TALKING POINTS
So, Everett ended it’s five-game losing streak tonight, but the Tips needed some fortunate bounces to accomplish it. Both of Everett’s goals, including the game winner with 2:49 remaining in regulation, came via friendly bounces off Seattle defensemen.
But that being said, you’d have to say Everett earned its bounces tonight. The Tips played with good energy, outshooting Seattle 44-21, and worked hard for the result.
It was particularly helpful when Seattle gave Everett a two-minute five-on-three power play shortly after the go-ahead goal. Therefore the Tips didn’t have to fight off any losing-streak nerves in the game’s final moments. Scott Ramsay’s hooking penalty on Chris Langkow was understandable as it prevented a scoring chance, but Jonathan Parker’s elbow on Rasmus Rissanen at the whistle was unnecessary.
The bad news for Everett was that captain Zack Dailey had to be helped off the ice early in the second period and did not return. The injury occurred on a bizarre play. Dailey was getting ready to round the Seattle net to flush out the defenseman when he collided violently with referee Graham Skilliter. Everett coach Craig Hartsburg said Dailey “had his bell rung” and will be re-evaluated tomorrow. Dailey was on the ice in pain for a while, so I doubt he’ll be available for the game in Portland.
TURNING POINT
Everett needed one more bounce, and the Tips got it with 2:49 remaining. Byron Froese turned and fired a blind slap shot from along the right boards. The shot deflected off Seattle defenseman Brenden Dillon’s skate to the opposite slot, where Kellan Tochkin was able to put it past Seattle goaltender Calvin Pickard.
HIT OF THE DAY
I had a hard time monitoring this tonight as nothing came close to the collision between Dailey and Skilliter.
THREE STARS
First star: Tochkin. Scored both Everett goals, getting a little puck luck on both. He has four goals in Everett’s past three games.
Second star: Pickard. Another strong effort with 42 saves. He made 96 saves in Seattle’s two games this weekend.
Third star: Tyler Maxwell, Everett. One assist, skated hard, but didn’t stand out above Everett’s other players to me.
The Herald’s honorable mention: Sena Acolatse, Seattle. Scored Seattle’s goal and played well in the offensive zone. Perhaps the best game I’ve seen Acolatse play against Everett since moving to forward.
