TALKING POINTS
Well, I never would have expected that.
After giving up two goals in less than three minutes in his first career start — one somewhat soft, one on a bad bounce — I figured Shayne Barrie was toast. In that situation, I don’t know how you can possibly expect anyone to hold up mentally. But give Barrie credit, and give the rest of the team credit for staying with it.
This was actually a pretty big deal for Everett. Leland Irving started each of Everett’s first 12 games, and there’s always been questions whether Barrie had the goods to hold down the backup spot. But given the way he held up tonight — especially with Brandon pounding him the rest of the first period — he certainly made a strong case for himself.
Also, Everett’s Matt Ius scored his first career WHL goal, and the Tips broke .500 for the first time this season.
TURNING POINT
Take your pick. A goal on any of the four or five quality scoring chances Brandon had in the first period when leading 2-0 and it’s game over. Instead, Barrie kept it out and gave a chance for the Tips to recover.
HIT OF THE DAY
Late in the third period the Brandon duo of Brayden Schenn and Brandon Regier rode Kyle Beach into the boards and left Beach crumpled on the ice.
THREE STARS
First star: Dane Crowley, Everett. Scored the game-winning goal and was his usual dependable self on defense.
Second star: Barrie. Congrats on the first career win.
Third star: Taylor Ellington, Everett. Solid D and a remarkable coast-to-cost rush that led to Ius’ insurance goal.
The Herald’s honorable mention: Andrew Clark, Brandon. Was an absolute demon in the first period as no Everett played could handle him early on.
LINEUP NOTES
For Everett, other than Barrie the only other change from Wednesday was forward Tyler Skauge came in for Eric English. Captain Jonathan Harty remains sidelined with his hip pointer, and goaltender David Reekie is still on the 60-day injured list. English, forward Tyler Eskesen and defenseman Eddie Friesen were healthy scratches.
For Brandon, captain Daryl Boyle and right wing Robert Brandis were out suspended. Boyle received a one-game suspension for his match penalty received Wednesday in Tri-City and Brandis received a two-game suspension for an interference major in that same game. The Wheat Kings called up 15-year-old forward Brandon Regier, their first-round pick in this year’s bantam draft and the younger brother of Tips prospect Jeff Regier, for his WHL debut. Forwards Sanfred King and Jordan Hale were healthy scratches.
