TALKING POINTS
These were two points the Tips had to have, and boy did they make sure they got them. The seven goals was a new season high for Everett, eclipsing the six scored twice earlier this season (including the last time the T-birds visited Everett).
Everett and Seattle are two
of the teams duking it out for the Western Conference’s final two playoff spots, and tonight the Tips just seemed more desperate than the T-birds. That desperation was best illustrated by Clayton Cumiskey, who in the first period was a house of fire.
As a result, Everett no longer finds itself alone in the Western Conference cellar. The Tips are now tied for seventh with Seattle and Kamloops. With Chilliwack also losing Friday, just one point separates the bottom four teams in the conference.
All seven goals were scored at even strength, so this game was a plus/minus bonanza (Brennan Yadlowski plus-5) or killer (Brenden Dillon minus-5), depending on which team you played for.
Finally, Tyler Maxwell eclipsed the 30-goal mark tonight. That’s back-to-back 30-goal seasons for Maxwell, and it’s just the seventh 30-goal season in Everett’s history.
TURNING POINT
The big goal was Everett’s second. The Tips led 1-0 and were on the power play when Maxwell was called for tripping behind the play, nullifying the advantage. However, on the ensuing four-on-four Cumiskey put in a tremendous sustained effort, producing the goal that gave the Tips a working margin.
HIT OF THE DAY
Early in the third period Everett’s Ryan Harrison put a good hit on Dave Sutter behind the Seattle net, sending Sutter sprawling along the boards and onto the ice.
THREE STARS
First star: Kent Simpson, Everett. 35 saves and his first shutout of the season. He made some spectacular stops, though his best saves came after the Tips led 4-0.
Second star: Cumiskey. Gordie Howe hat trick with a goal, assist and fight. His first Gordie Howe hat trick in the WHL.
Third star: Cody Fowlie, Everett. Two goals and an assist, he skated well tonight.
The Herald’s honorable mention: Parker Stanfield, Everett. Two assists, he was often dangerous.
