TALKING POINTS
Welcome to Everett, Tyler Maxwell. The 17-year-old Californian netted a hat trick in just his second game in a Tips uniform as Everett won for the first time this preseason.
It wasn’t just the Maxwell show as the Tips turned in an excellent overall offensive performance, which is crucial for Everett to have any kind of success this season.
But even including the goal output, I think the most encouraging thing for Everett so far is that all the newcomers look like they belong in this league. Everett, even though it’s already cut its roster down quite a bit, still needs to trim a couple more bodies. So far the newcomers are making that a difficult decision for GM Doug Soetaert.
And I guess the fans are shaking off a little preseason rust, too. After Maxwell’s hat trick only one hat was tossed onto the ice, and that one came about five minutes after the goal.
TURNING POINT
Everett’s third goal, when Maxwell put in a rebound 8:08 into the game, is really the one that sealed it tonight.
HIT OF THE DAY
Many to choose from tonight. But I’m not sure anyone connected more than when Everett’s Zack Dailey skated his head into the crossbar on a partial breakaway midway through the second period. Fortunately Dailey was OK.
THREE STARS (just mine tonight)
First star: Maxwell. Served notice that he can help fill the offensive void this season.
Second star: Shane Harper, Everett. A goal and three assists as he performed well as the playmaker.
Third star: Kyle Beach, Everett. Gordie Howe hat trick tonight, made the simple plays offensively.
