SPOKANE — The Everett AquaSox are in danger of squandering all their good work from the first week of the season.
Everett’s slide continued Tuesday night as the Sox lost their third straight, falling 6-2 to the Spokane Indians.
After starting the season with seven straight wins, Everett (8-4) has lost four of its past five. And after building an early lead in the Northwest League’s West Division, the rest of Everett’s rivals are closing in.
Spokane scored all six of its runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings as the Indians (4-7) rallied to clinch the five-game series. Danny Lima, Jason Kudlock and Yefry Castillo each had two hits to pace Spokane.
Anthony Phillips went 2-for-4 to lead the Sox.
Everett, behind the pitching of starter Anthony Fernandez, led 2-1 going into the sixth inning. However, it all fell apart of the Sox and reliever Austin Hudson.
First, the Indians scratched together two runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead.
The inning was set up when Sox second baseman Terry Serrano botched Lima’s double-play grounder, putting runners at the corners with one out.
Lima was then put in motion and avoided a double play on Andrew Clark’s grounder to short, allowing Michael Olt to score from third to tie the score.
Snohomish High School graduate Kevin Rodland followed with an RBI single to left, giving Spokane a 3-2 lead.
Spokane then put the game away with three more in the seventh.
Pinch runner Guillermo Pimentel bowled over Sox catcher Steven Baron to score on a fielder’s choice grounder to make it 4-2.
Then a sacrifice fly by Olt and an RBI single by Lima stretched the Indians’ lead to four.
Justin Earls pitched two innings of scoreless relief to earn the win, his first as a professional.
Hudson suffered the loss, allowing five runs in one inning to fall to 2-1. Fernandez gave up one run on five hits in 51/3 innings, striking out five.
Everett took an early lead, scoring into the top of the first. Kevin Rivers singled up the middle, and Kevin Mailloux knocked over Spokane catcher Castillo to score from second, giving the Sox a 1-0 lead.
The Sox doubled their lead in the second. With two out and nobody one Baron singled to left, then came around to score on Phillips’ double to the left-center gap, making it 2-0.
Spokane got on the board in the bottom of the fifth. With two out Kudlock and Castillo hit back-to-back doubles, Kudlock scoring on the second of those to cut the lead to 2-1.
Prior to the game Rivers was named the first Northwest League Offensive Player of the Week for the 2010 season. Rivers opened the season by batting .371 (13-for-35) with two home runs, 10 runs and nine RBI in Everett’s first 10 games.
